Human Trafficking 101:

Competency-Based Training for CARF-Accredited Social Services

Human Trafficking 101 is a two-hour course that provides social services professionals with an understanding of how human trafficking works, how to recognize it, and how to support youth who are being trafficked or exploited in the sex trade.

Why Human Trafficking 101?

The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) has added competency-based human-trafficking training to its list of mandatory trainings to be undertaken by agencies accredited under its child and youth standards. The standard states the training must be undertaken by all personnel at hire and at regular intervals.

As a provincial leader in educating adults in the topic of sexual exploitation and human trafficking, a CARF accredited program itself, and with sex trafficking being the primary form of human trafficking in Canada, Children of the Street is the best choice to provide this training to agencies in British Columbia and beyond.

Workshop participants will learn:

  • The definition of human trafficking and sexual exploitation.
  • The warning signs of grooming and luring.
  • Who is most at risk of human trafficking.
  • Who the exploiters are and the tactics they use.
  • How technology is used to exploit young people.
  • The laws related to child/youth sexual exploitation and human trafficking.
  • How to access community services, how to report, and how to support exploited youth.
  • The systematic changes necessary to support victims and survivors of sexual exploitation and trafficking.

What you get:

  • A two-hour high-quality, competency-based course that meets CARF requirements under its child and youth services, by a CARF accredited program.
  • Comprehensive, trauma-informed and client-centered training.
  • Training that is delivered by highly qualified Program Facilitators who have years of combined experience providing educational prevention workshops and supporting survivors affected by this crime.
  • Participants receive a certificate upon successful completion of a competency-based test.
  • Your agency will be publicly acknowledged on our website as an official partner in our quest to end the sexual exploitation and trafficking of children and youth.
  • The training can be delivered in person and virtually.

Cost:

  • $60 per person.
  • Minimum 30 participants.
  • The maximum number of participants in an in-person setting is 60.
  • There is no maximum number of participants for virtual settings.

FAQs

Is this training delivered in-person or online?

Both options are available. In-person workshops can be held at your location. Virtual courses will be held via Zoom. Please see the minimum and maximum requirements above.

What can I do if I have less than 30 participants?

Training sessions are possible with fewer than 30 participants so long as you’re able to pay the $1,800 that would be raised if 30 were present.

If you have fewer than 30 participants and are not able to pay the full course fees, please contact us to discuss other solutions, such as a joint course with other agencies.

What does the competency-based component of the course look like, and what do I need to do to pass the course successfully?

Following the training, participants will be asked to complete a quiz made up of 10 multiple choice questions. Only those who attend the course are eligible to take the quiz. You need to receive 80% to pass.

For in-person settings, the quiz will be conducted at the conclusion of the training session and scored on the spot. Those who attended the training virtually will be sent an individual link to a digital quiz. Participants will be notified of their score immediately.

What happens if I don’t pass the quiz?

If you don’t receive an 80% score in your quiz, you can retake it. If you don’t pass the quiz the second time, you will be required to attend the course again.

How long is my certificate valid for?

A digital certificate will be emailed to you within 30 days of completing the course and quiz successfully. The certificate is valid for 3 years.

Under the CARF standards, Human Trafficking training must be taken at regular intervals. Therefore, after three years you will be required to participate in the course again and take the quiz to recertify.

My agency is not CARF-accredited. Can we book a Human Trafficking 101 course?

Of course! If your agency is accredited through a different accrediting body, looking to receive accreditation, or not accredited at all, you are welcome to book the course for your staff to receive valuable knowledge and tools to prevent human trafficking and support victims and survivors. However, if you are accredited through a different commission, it is your responsibility to confirm that this training meets its standards.

My agency is located outside BC’s Lower Mainland, can you travel to my community?

Yes!  We can travel to any community in BC. However, outside of the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley, we request that the host agency cover our expenses related to travel and accommodation, etc. Contact us for a quote. Virtual workshops are also a great option for those outside of our main service delivery area.

Do you deliver Human Trafficking 101 in other provinces?

Yes! We can deliver Human Trafficking 101 to any community in Canada virtually. Please contact us to discuss this option.
